    That trident (in Russian три́зуб /trýzub/) has its origin in the ruling dynasty of Kievan Rus’, the Rurik dynasty, founded in the year 862 by the Varangian prince Rurik. All Russian (and Ukrainian, of course) royalty originates from this dynasty.

    And its capital was Kiev, perhaps for this reason, the Ukrainian government proudly displays the symbol, since its territory was of great importance to the ruling royalty (and still ruling).
